Tea Time Talk is a monthly adult program series of lectures, exhibit tours and performances on a variety of history-related subjects. Refreshments are served in the lower level of the Glos Mansion immediately following the program.

Thursday, September 16
Little Schoolhouse on the Prairie
1:00 p.m. FREE
What was life like in a one-room schoolhouse? Elizabeth Carlson, who appears in period costume as schoolteacher Miss Isabella Hoffmann circa 1858, takes audience members back to a typical mid-19th century classroom as she gives lessons and speaks about life in an old prairie school.

Chicago’s “Go to 2040” Plan

What will the Chicago metro area look like in 30 years? The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning has outlined its vision in the “Go to 2040” plan, which takes its momentum from Daniel Burnham’s 100-year old Plan of Chicago. Find out how the Chicago area will become a global competitor and the city’s important role as an international transportation hub.

100 Years as a City

Elmhurst City Manager Tom Borchert will explore how Elmhurst has evolved as a city over the last 100 years, and the differences between the city and village forms of government. Mr. Borchert will discuss some of the challenges and interesting stories that have occurred during his career in municipal government.

Book a presentation from one of our museum representatives for your group or club by calling (630) 833-1457. We currently offer two slide shows and one power point presentation:
1) Prairie Village
This slide show discusses the beginnings of Elmhurst from the early 1830s to the turn of the century. Many important landowners and founders of Elmhurst are discussed. Former farms and estates are shown in the slides.
2) Building a Modern Suburb, 1910 - 1930
This slide show takes a look at Elmhurst, the city from the early 1920s to nearly the present. It discusses how transportation and modernization changed the face of the town in the 20th century.
3) Visionaries of Elmhurst
Author and historian Dr. Virginia Stewart presents images and stories from her book, Visionary: An Elmhurst Retrospective. Dr. Stewart explores the many places and people that formed Elmhurst into the vibrant city it is today.
